Sydney Gay and Lesbian ChoirBorn and educated in Melbourne, Jonathon began his singing career with Victoria State Opera joining their first Australian tour of Pirates of Penzance in 1984 with Jon English, Simon Gallaher, June Bronhill, Marina Prior, Todd McKenny and David Hobson.

After completing a Post Graduate Degree in Music at Queensland Conservatorium of Music studying with Donald Smith the following years lead Jonathon to win some of Australia’s most coveted performing scholarships, including the Young Artists Program with Opera of Queensland where he toured extensively throughout Queensland and understudied and performed many Principle Tenor roles including Madama Butterfly, Aida, Rigoletto, Barber of Seville, Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Pasquale, Orpheus in the Under World, Student Prince and The Gondoliers to name a few.

After studying in Germany and London, Jonathon then joined Opera Australia’s Young Artist Program in 1988 where he made his debut with Dame Joan Sutherland in The Merry Widow and major role debut in the title role of Britten’s Albert Herring at the Sydney Opera House, performing with many of the world’s great singers, conductors and directors including Baz Luhrmann, Graeme Murphy, Grace Bumbry, Rita Hunter, and Richard Bonynge.

With some 60 stage roles to his credit, Jonathon has performed extensively in concert with Queensland Pops Orchestra and most of Australia’s State Symphony Orchestras (including Sydney Symphony, Melbourne Symphony, Queensland Symphony and Western Australia Symphony) as Tenor Soloist in many major Oratorio and concerts including the Messiah, Bernstien Mass, Berlioz Requiem, Lloyd Webber Requiem, Puccini Mass and Rossini’s Messa di Gloria,Rachmaninov’ s Vespers and performed the Australian premiere of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass.

Today, Jonathon integrates a busy singing career and has also performed throughout Australia, New Zealand and Asia with EMI recording artists - Tenor Australis in great demand for corporate events and appearing on National Television extensively for Darling Harbour Carols,Carols in the Domain,Australian of the Year Awards, Good Morning Australia, the Today Show and has featured on Our House, ABC’s Compass, Entertainment Tonight, Australian Story, Kerrie-Ann’s Morning Show, Talking Heads, ABC Arts Program, Spicks and Specks and 60 Minutes.

Other notable achievements include Jonathon leading some of Australia ’s finest community choirs including the award-winning Melbourne Gay and Lesbian Chorus and Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir to win the Australasian Choral Championships at the City of Sydney Eisteddfod; recording and conducting Mythologia for the Olympic Cultural Festival with Graeme Murphy’s Sydney Dance Company; and recording and performing with k d lang and Jimmy Sommerville to name a few amongst dozens of memorable performances.

Jonathon has also been in great demand as a Performer, Guest Lecturer and Conductor around Australia and has also toured Asia, New Zealand, USA and Canada.

With a deep commitment to the community and youth music education, Jonathon is also the Founding Director of the Sydney Street Choir for the homeless and disadvantaged and Australian Pop Choir and Pop Kidz appearing with them on the Today Show, Australian Story and Compass, receiving a Community Services Award from South Sydney Council and has taught for the NSW Education Department’s Training Development Program and Southern Stars, David Aitken’s Studios and Brent Street and ED5 Studios, with many of his students going on to study and work in professional theatre and television around the world including members of High Five and Ajaqa, at NIDA, WAPA, Opera Australia and Canberra School of Music, Victorian College of the Arts, Australian Catholic University, and the Moulin, Paris.

Most recently Jonathon has performed extensively with Tenor Australis in concert with Amelia Farrugia at Twilight at Taronga series, Joanna Cole in a June Bronhill Tribute, Corporate events around Australia, A Night at the Proms with Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir, and the National television broadcast of Carols in the Domain.

Jonathon has also adjudicated many of Australia’s major Eisteddfods including City of Sydney, Parramatta, Australian Capital Territory, City of Hobart, Gold Coast, Bendigo, West Gippsland, Geelong, and Mount Gambier.

Jonathon continues his busy performing, teaching and conducting career along side his commitments as Vocal Consultant to the Southern Stars and Wollongong Performers Company as part of the NSW Education Department and is the Founding Music Director for the Choir of Hard Knocks proudly supporting the homeless and disadvantaged in Melbourne, leading them to perform sellout concerts at Sydney Opera House and Melbourne Town Hall and being awarded a Platinum ARIA for their first CD From the Heart.

As a result of his services to the Community Jonathon has also received a Commendation from the City of Melbourne , St Michael’s Medallion, John Campbell ‘MO’ Award along with nominations for News Limited’s Pride of Australia, Commonwealth Bank’s Local Hero and the Bar None Award from the Victorian Government.

In 2008 Jonathon has also been awarded RMIT Communicator of the Year, ANZAC of the Year and Victorian and Australian of the Year – Local Hero and an Honorary Doctor of Griffith University in Queensland.
