With a song in his heart
Born and educated in Melbourne, Jonathon began his singing career with Victoria State Opera joining their first Australian tour of Pirates of Penzance in 1984 with Jon English, Simon Gallaher, June Bronhill, Marina Prior, Todd McKenny and David Hobson.
After completing a Post Graduate Degree in Music at Queensland Conservatorium of Music studying with Donald Smith the following years lead Jonathon to win some of Australia’s most coveted performing scholarships, including the Young Artists Program with Opera of Queensland where he toured extensively throughout Queensland and understudied and performed many Principle Tenor roles including Madama Butterfly, Aida, Rigoletto, Barber of Seville, Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Pasquale, Orpheus in the Under World, Student Prince and The Gondoliers to name a few.
After studying in Germany and London, Jonathon then joined Opera Australia’s Young Artist Program in 1988 where he made his debut with Dame Joan Sutherland in The Merry Widow and major role debut in the title role of Britten’s Albert Herring at the Sydney Opera House, performing with many of the world’s great singers, conductors and directors including Baz Luhrmann, Graeme Murphy, Grace Bumbry, Rita Hunter, and Richard Bonynge.
With some 60 stage roles to his credit, Jonathon has performed extensively in concert with Queensland Pops Orchestra and most of Australia’s State Symphony Orchestras (including Sydney Symphony, Melbourne Symphony, Queensland Symphony and Western Australia Symphony) as Tenor Soloist in many major Oratorio and concerts including the Messiah, Bernstien Mass, Berlioz Requiem, Lloyd Webber Requiem, Puccini Mass and Rossini’s Messa di Gloria,Rachmaninov’ s Vespers and performed the Australian premiere of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass.
Today, Jonathon integrates a busy singing career and has also performed throughout Australia, New Zealand and Asia with EMI recording artists – Tenor Australis in great demand for corporate events and appearing on National Television extensively for Darling Harbour Carols, Carols in the Domain,Australian of the Year Awards, Good Morning Australia, the Today Show and has featured on Our House, ABC’s Compass, Entertainment Tonight, Australian Story, Kerrie-Ann’s Morning Show, Talking Heads, ABC Arts Program, Spicks and Specks and 60 Minutes.
Jonathon has also been in demand as a performer, guest lecturer and conductor around Australia and has also toured Asia, New Zealand, USA and Canada.
Most recently Jonathon has performed extensively with Tenor Australis in concert with Amelia Farrugia at Twilight at Taronga series, Joanna Cole in a June Bronhill Tribute, corporate events around Australia, A Night at the Proms with Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir, and the National television broadcast of Carols in the Domain.
